Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is The Slants Foundation?
The Slants Foundation is a nonprofit that supports Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) artists who use their work to create social change. We offer resources, mentorship, and grants to help amplify underrepresented voices in the arts.
Learn more about our past projects on our programs page.
2. Who founded The Slants Foundation?
The foundation was started by members of The Slants, one of the first all-Asian American dance rock bands. The group was known for combining music with activism around identity, free speech, and representation.
3. How is The Slants Foundation different from The Slants (the band)?
The Slants was an all-Asian American dance rock band known for blending music and activism. After retiring the band, some members launched The Slants Foundation to support arts and activism on a broader scale.
The band is no longer active, but the foundation continues its mission by supporting AAPI artists creating social impact. Some former band members volunteer with the foundation, but the nonprofit is independently operated with its own board and leadership.
Learn more about the band’s history here, and the foundation’s programs here.
4. What kind of support does The Slants Foundation offer?
We offer grants, mentorship, and educational programs for AAPI artists. Our focus is helping artists merge creativity with activism in sustainable, measurable ways.
5. Who can apply for your grants and programs?
Artists from the Asian and Pacific Islander diaspora, in all disciplines and genres, are welcome to apply. U.S. citizenship is not required, but projects should benefit historically marginalized communities — especially those that are underrepresented.
6. When are applications open?
Applications for Asian PaCIVICS typically open in the first quarter of the year. Other opportunities — including film licensing, workshops, and artist grants — are announced via our newsletter.

7. How is The Slants Foundation funded?
We are supported by individual donors, funders, and artist-activists. The foundation also receives 100% of royalties from The Slants band, which covers our overhead — meaning all public donations go directly to the artists we serve.
8. Can I donate to support your work?
Yes! You can make a one-time or recurring gift through our Donate page. Your support goes directly to AAPI artists working at the intersection of art and activism.
9. What does the name “The Slants” mean?
The name was chosen to reclaim a racial slur and spark conversation about identity and stereotypes. It reflects our belief in using art to challenge harmful narratives and share our own "slant" or artistic perspective on the world.
10. How do I stay updated on events and opportunities?
